The Value of Play

- You say that you love your children,
And are concerned that they learn today,
As am I, that's why I'm providing
A variety of kinds of play. You are asking what's the value
Of having your children play?
Your daughter's creating a tower,
She may be a builder someday.
You're asking me the value
Of blocks and sand and clay.
Your children are solving problems,
They will use that skill every day.
You're saying that you don't want your son
To play in that sissy way.
He's learning to cuddle a doll,
He may be a father someday.

You're questioning the interest centers,
They just look like useless play.
Your children are making choices,
They'll be on their own someday.
You're worried your children aren't learning
And later they'll have to pay.
They're learning a pattern for learning,
For they'll be learners always.

As I was growing the adults in my life encouraged play at all times, children were never aloud to be in the room when adults were talking. I can remember growing that after my homework was done and I had change into my play clothes then I was able to go outside and play with my friends until it started to get dark.
I feel play is completely different from when I was growing up because we were allowed to be creative with our play. I think back to the days of my childhood and being the only child and playing by myself, i played school using old school work and my dolls, also having tea parties using the dishes from the kitchen. Play back than was what it was and that is simply play. children were not told how to or what to use when playing. Adults were allowed to enter a child's play when they were invited by the child other than that adults just watched. I hope that children can become more creative with their play and be free to play how they feel, without the influence of the television shows.
My thoughts regarding play is that we the adults encourage children to go and play instead of playing a video game or watching T.V. for hours upon hours.

I appreciated your views on little boys playing with dolls. It is true they are learning how to cuddle and to be nuturing to another being. This will prepare them to be a "father one day". Thank you for sharing.
